Kira was a very unlikely candidate for the obedience ring and, at one point early in our training,  I was told that I’d never get her into the ring.   She was noise sensitive and had a horrible work ethic.  She would quit, bolt, or shut down if pressured.   She failed the CGN test the first time we tried it in 1998.  We struggled through many battles when she said “NO” and I had to convince her “YES”.  In the end,  she enjoyed working and her training helped her become a lovely confident girl who achieved more than I ever dreamed possible.

Kira won an all-breed High In Trial for her second CD leg in 2000.   She finished her CDX in 2001 in 4 trials.  She was the No. 2 Boxer and No. 8 Working Breed in Obedience in 2001.   She completed her Utility Title and Obedience Trial Championship in 2003.  She was No. 3 Boxer in Obedience in 2003 with her 3 utility scores.   We continued to play in 2004 although I retired her from the Utility ring and we trialed almost exclusively in Open B.  She was No. 1 Boxer and No. 4 Working Breed in Obedience in 2004.  Her last trial was in Red Deer at the beginning of November, 2004.   She had a wonderful weekend and qualified in the mid-190’s in each of her classes.   Red Deer was her retirement weekend and I was looking forward to enjoying her in her “silver years”.   She died in her sleep 10 days later, leaving this world as gently as she lived in it.

Kira was the first boxer in Canada to achieve the Draft Dog title.   She really enjoyed her carting work and, for some reason,  noise never bothered her if she was in harness working.

She loved agility and earned her first CKC Intermediate leg on her 8th birthday!

Kira’s true life work was as a therapy dog.  She and I were the Team Leader for our PALS group for 5 years.  She loved putting on her blue bandana and going up the stairs to the Bowcrest Care Centre on Saturday mornings.  She had an uncanny ability to comfort people and to seek out those people who needed her.  I was always humbled to watch her do her work.

Kira was the most kind and gentle soul you can imagine.  She had a wicked sense of humour and was tremendously clever.   She was my heart and soul and I miss her terribly.
